From a branding point of view, it is vitally important to develop your brand first, discover it, define it, and then develop it with a clear understanding of what design elements will best communicate that brand to a marketplace. 

As a designer, I get ready to do a lot of free work without any guarantee of compensation. As a client, get ready for LOTS AND LOTS of choices - it may work if you are clear about your brand and what you are standing up for; but if not, it can be highly overwhelming and you might be changing the design later only because it no longer meets the objectives of your brand. And as the saying goes, “time is money”, where right from the get-go employ a professional with experience, quality of output, a good understanding of the strategy of the project and in the long term this will save you money. This forethought and clarity of brand is truly important in building a business that stands out among the crowded marketplace. I like the saying "You only have just 7 seconds to make a good first impression."
